Just so you know, I'm not the smartest guy when it comes to computors. Alright, in the downstairs area of my house, there is a family computor that has DSL. Is it possible to connect my computor in the upstairs area to the same DSL network?

yes, install a router between the DSL ATM and the computer then if the house is prewired for network connect around for a wired system. Else go wireless. Buy a modest Modem like net gear, linksys, etc but stay away from belkin and the other cheappo's as the only work for a little while (just long enough to get out of warranty). and don't by "N" until the standards get put in cement.

The simplest way to do this is to install a broadband router with wireless networking capability between the family computer and your DSL modem, and install a wireless networking card in your upstairs computer. Linksys, DLink, and Netgear all make the kind of equipment you need. I'd recommend you go to a store like CompUSA and have them help you choose all the right components and explain how to install them.

You might also want to check with your DSL provider to see if they have a home networking package available.

Well, more info, is it wireless or Ethernet.

If wireless, just go to start > control panel > wireless network (you'll have this option only on a laptop, on a desktob, you have to buy a wireless connection and install it ) > view more wireless > connect to you wireless network.

This is only possible if your DSL modem also has a router with it, if you have at&t, then yes, the modem is also a router. If not, you must also buy a router.

You need a router. You have much to learn about this topic but don't let it overwelm you. Just keep it simple. Go get a Linksys (best free 24H 7D ENGLISH tech support) WRT54G router. It has wireless capabilities. If you don't want to go wireless you can get the wired version. Ask a knowledgable sales rep at a local Mom n' Pop computer store what you need to buy for wired vs. wireless. *** When you get home, if the pictures don't help you, and the simple software walkthrough doesn't help you, then call the toll free # on the box and they will almost do it for you!

A hub? or a router? A hub is in easy terms a dummy for extending a community, so i anticipate it truly is a router. you merely could turn on the router application and set it up with a community call. whilst the recent laptop unearths the community call (could %. it up with the aid of prompt card quickly), you pick it and are related! ideally, you may upload an encryption (WEP) key on your community too to sidestep others from stepping into it. back, the prompt router application could provide help to do this.

You can run cables and use a splitter, or you could set up a wireless network, which is probably easier and tidier.
