Media Access Controller

It's the thing that forms the connection between the PHY or physical connection and the rest of the network stack. In technical terms it implements the layer 2 interface. Layer 1 is the physical interface and level 3 is IP for most people.

Mac is usually short for macintosh, a company that makes it's own all in one package of computer. Mac includes the operating syatem aswell as the operating system and monitor/keyboard/mouse.

The first set of alpha numneric characters represent the maker of the device. The rest of the numbers are unique to your device.
