Tragedy is a devastating event. Traditionally it is viewed as something that occurs to a single person, or a protagonist, but I wouldn't limit to just that in today's sense. I think a tragedy can happen to anyone, and it can be used to describe an event that is catastrophic. So, yes, it is something that can fall upon a person striving to attain or protect a value; but I would not limit it to just only that circumstance.

Tragedy IS!
There is no good or bad in tragedy!
Tragedy is the way the play writer is radiating his message to the audience!
The tragic person is fulfilling his/ her existence through the tragic events! If those were not, there wouldn't be need for existence of the tragic person, of the tragedy itself!
