If you have the Windows XP OS CD all you have to do to get rid of the Virus is to fdisk the hard drive ( which will wipe it completely clean as it was new). Then reload XP and all other programs. Yes, a little drastic but, sometimes it is the price you pay for not having virus protection. Another way is purchase a virus program and hope that it can find and kill out the virus without corrupting your programs, otherwise you are still back to my first suggestion ---fdisk the hard drive---- which is usually drive :c.

AVG offers free download of software - but if your friend can access the 'Net then I'd suggest running him/her to kaspersky(dot)com first and use their free online virus scan - then go to trendmicro(dot)com and use theirs. If I can get net access, I take those steps first with any PC that I have to try and free from viruses.
If your friend has Windows XP - which I'm betting they do, be sure to Reboot in Safe Mode with Network Support at start-up! To do this - re-start your PC and then as the DOS screen is loading start tapping F8 on your function keys until you get into a menu where it will ask you what you want to boot into, with (1) Normal mode being the first and so on. Choose the # that says Safe Mode with Network so you can get online. This will bypass the Restore Points that most all XP users have on their system and remove any virus if its infected the restore area.
Otherwise you'll have to disable the Restore Points first - then run a scan. Viruses typically love to hide inside the System Restore - so you should wipe this area clean or run a virus scan in Safe Mode first.

Get AVG free, then if that fails to fix get a second hard drive install a fresh operating system on it, then just drag over all the files,Pics etc you want to keep then format that drive. Problem solved. This way your friend will not lose any data and a second drive does not have to cost a fortune.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.
download firefox for free, Just have a try:
