As Rob said, its a form of Wax. It normally sits on the bottom in a solid form.
The bottom of the lava lamp is actually a heating element, and as it heats and melts the wax it sets up convection currents that carry the wax upwards and back down.
Add a lamp for cool lighting effects and your done.
Cold lava, incidentally, is very common. Its called Rock.

that could be a style of wax. It should be extremely extra dense than the liquid, then because it heats It melts, rises, then cools and strikes downwards. The exciting element to me is that it may get too warm OR too chilly.. To warm the wax gathers on the right, too chilly, is like once you turn it off, of direction. extra exciting is that somebody by twist of destiny killed themselves with a lava lamp.. (see link)

Lava is melted rock so "lava in 'cooler' form" is actually hard rock...
I don't think you have a stone in your lamp!
