Now that the gov has stepped in on telling us what we can and cant do with smoking,(for our own good)how long before other things get taxed. The gov may decide that since this is the fattest nation in the world all you lard a55es should pay a tax for those dollar menue items you love so much.Or maybe you drunks who think a twelve pack after work is a good way to wind down. How about taxing that more for your own good.Everyone is quick to jump on the band wagon to take something away from somebody.Till its you they take it away from. You sheep just keep on following the herd ,the wolf will get you soon enough

I totally agree........I smoke and am sick of getting picked on...dam it.lol
And I think that cigarettes IS where it ends. They make way too much money from it,no one can complain because smoking is bad for us smokers....therefore...we are declared to have...no argument. And no one is going to complain.
Actually....is cigarettes and gas...thats where it ends .lol
If they started taxes for say............CHOCOLATE........i bet there would be an entire national uprising......lol. So they use the whole cigarettes are baaadd....mmmm kayee thing to take care of the governments money addiction.Thats how they can get away with it.

It's difficult for me to empathize with you. According to the Tobacco-Free Austin Coalition, the tax will raise $1 billion a year in new revenue, prevent 291,000 kids alive today from ever becoming smokers, save 134,000 Texans from smoking-caused deaths, and produce $5 billion dollars a year in long term health care savings. The annual health care costs in Texas directly caused by smoking is $4.55 billion. The portion covered by the state Medicaid program is $1.26 billion.

A pack of cigarettes in Sydney, Australia (I'm a native Texan currently living "Down Under") costs anywhere from $10-$15. It's still too cheap in Texas.

Regardless of where the tax money actually goes, smoking has incredibly adverse effects on health that cost a vast amount of money to test and treat. I have many loved ones who smoke. I've had people close to me die of cancer. I applaud any effort that might save many lives.

They tax cigarettes so much because, Who is going to complain?
We all know they aren't good for you but, they get tons of money from them and that's why they aren't illegal. People go out and get drunk all the time and maim and kill people instantly, but that doesn't seem to be much of a problem does it!!!!!!

Actually, most fast food items are taxed. Even in states that don't have food tax, those items are still taxed because they are prepared. And alcohol is taxed. It is called sin tax and cigarettes and lottery tickets are in the same category.

Why not alcohol? Why hasn't the price of that changed much in so long?I think there are more drinkers out there than smokers. And drinking sometimes has an immedient effect when it comes to death. But, i guess instant death is cheaper on healthcare prices...lmao.And that very unspoken yet TRUTHFUL statement shows you that the government is NOT on your side.
How about uping the price of cheese burgers? I'm willing to bet that more folks are skyrocketing health care prices and dieing from heart attackes do to fast food consumption than smokers are.I'am also willing to bet that there are more overweight children in the US than ones that have smoking habits.HELLO!

Almost 90% of the US population has some type of addiction.Chocolate...FOOD.FAST FOOD...scoal.....ALCOHOL....SODAS....pain killers...ILLEGAL DRUGS....cigarettes....chewing tabacco...SUGARY FOODS..FREAKING NASAL SPRAY FOR GOD'S SAKE..NYQUIL!..sleeping pills..need i continue?

I'm sick and tired of "this my addiction is better than yours" attitude.

Look at the illegal drug problems our country has...and their worried about cigarettes? They can't do anything about that so they want to pick on us.Well....I got news for you stupid *** folks who claim that cigarettes are what lead to narcotic abuse.Cigarettes are not anywhere NEAR as intoxicating as a bottle of beer....and once your 14 year old gets a hold on a bottle of beer and gets drunk...THEY LOVE IT.....but sooner or later....beer isn't enough...where can your child get a better high? HMMM....how about your medicine cabinet??? Its CHEAPER to make a months supply of crystal meth than it is to buy a pack of smokes.....think about what you have done.IDIOT! Might want to fight for them to raise the price of children's Tylenol now......dont ya think? And you might want to fight for them to remove alcoholic beaverage commercials from your television sets.considering...thats where the "I wanna get stupid and high" attitude REALLY comes from.Oh...and you may want to raise the price and availibility of common perscription pain killers concidering that is most likely what your child is addicted too.

TALK to your children.Get them busy doing other things...GUIDE them the RIGHT way...DO YOUR DAMNED PARENTING JOB....and leave me and my smoking addiction the hell ALONE! And teach them to freaking EAT RIGHT while your at it! Stop influencing them with your own fast food eating addictions.

Cigarettes don't make your child feel high,drunk..or intoxicated. They make them feel cool, independent and grown up......raising the price of smokes isn't the answer....putting your insecure teenager in theraphy would be more of an answer.
And if you want to get technical about my habit is better than yours.......lets compare....Some are showing their children by smoking infront of them, while other parents are stopping by McDonalds every other damned day and actually putting the death sentence right into their hands for them.Now...does any of that make any sence to you?...THEIR BOTH EQUALLY BAD! why pick on just one?
I refuse to pay a high price for smokes....(other than obvious health issues) unless it is going to a good cause like my own future health care lmao or to schools......but you can BET that those taxes are not going to any cause other than the government's own MONEY ADDICTION.
