I wonder because when I'm on my period I feel like I'm starving. I end up eating about 200-300 more calories a day and only want more.

Yes, (but it's not an some enormous amount). That's why one of the symptoms of anorexia is becoming amennorheaic (absence of a menstrual period). The body recognizes it's not getting the calories it needs to support it's functions, so it stops all unnecessary life-sustaining processes (like menstruating). That's how the hormone system is affected by anorexia. Same with lactation (breastfeeding) women who nurse their babies lose weight very rapidly unless they bump up their caloric intake because it takes a lot of calories for the body to lactate. All of your body's functions burn calories Breathing, blinking, having your heart beat, etc).

Not really no. 90% of the calories you burn is your "at rest" burn, just your basic functions for your body to live. The other 10% is burnt in exercise (or lack there of), menstration only really uses one muscle - your uterus. However, the difference in water retention, which has to do with hormones, can make you feel like you lost weight.

Yes! The time and effort involved in controlling this is squared by your effort to diminish the effect that you have on those around you. Find the balance and you will have the key to life.
