The most major ways is:(a) The mroe the population the more representatives in Congress that state will have as well as more competition for any presidential/congress elections. (b) The population also helps determine the taxes in a state because if the population is overcrowded then we would have to pay more taxes for public schools and medical care for other people. Also we would need more police officers as well as wildfire scientists/firefighters.

More federal money is available; this is why states fight the government every ten years when the census results come in. More people = more money.
Also more people strain the infrastructure: the roads, the hospitals, the schools, the water systems, the sewer systems. Unless a state can make an educated guess about where the next population shift will occur, they will be caught with their pants down, planning-wise. Hope this helps...

In Economics, increase in population will lead to increase in wants and needs, so that means, solid waste management, pollution, unemployment and other effects will likely occur...Also, migration will come into the picture and that decreases the number of people living in the state. Think then what will happen...LOL
