HI!
I used to get many 6x items for my daughter when she was 6 years old. She has always been a little bit heavier than the rest of her female classmates.
6x stands for "wider" / but the length of the items remains the same to regular size 6 pieces of clothing.
If your niece is "considerably" taller than her classmates I would suggest asking her mother for advise since she might need a size 8 instead. If she is just a little bit taller a regular size 6 will fit her perfectly.
SUGGESTION: If getting the right size puts you in a stressful situation simply get her a colorful DIARY. Girls her age love Diaries with locks and keys. My daugher does!
Good Luck!!!

the 6x is for 'bigger' girls. I have found at JC Penny pants with an elastic adjustment inside. They work well for my skinniest/long legged daughter. You could also try a 7slim, there isn't much difference. I have also found (at JC Penny anyway) that a 6 regular is the same in the waist as a 7 slim, the 7 slim is longer in the legs.

6X is a larger size 6,,like a 61/2,,because going right into a 7 from a 6 is too big at that age group,,,,,,
