most of the time you ill see a black spot near there waste hole. I have guppies to feed my turtle and when they are preganant they hae that black spot and within several days the babies are born. Had one guppy for like 3 years and gave birth like 3 times a month!!! What a mother she was!! :P

Only guppies get pregnant, they will usually have a triangular black spot behind the anal fin, known as a gravid spot. The colour is caused by the eyes of the guppy fry. When the guppy is ready to drop her fry, she will look almost boxy.

The other fish are egg layers and usually don't get "fat", although the females may exhibit colour changes, and look slightly rounder (full of eggs) when they're ready to breed. You will need to google information on each species for breeding habits, as I think tetras prefer to lay eggs on broad leafed plants, while catfish generally prefer a cave (though I've heard of some types that will lay eggs right on the aquarium glass!)

Only live bearers get pregnant. Look for a gravid spot above the anal fin.
