Its fish what do you expect. They are somewhat smelly. they poo in the water and the filters don't always get all the poo. You could get a bottom dweller like a pelco or a cory fish to eat up the alage. so really its the poo. Hope this helps alittle.

tape a piece of white paper to one end of the tank and look at it through the tank from the other side. Is it yellowish? Even yellowed water will look clear head on, but when you look at something white through the tank, it's a really easy way to tell if you have an ammonia problem. Have your water tested or purchase a test kit for yourself. If you are above 0ppm of ammonia, that's where the smell is comming from.

You have a ton of biological filtration in your tank. That means you are a farm for nitrifying bacteria. If your levels are a little out of whack, then that's where the smell is comming from. Again, test your water.

If you find the water to be a little yellowed from a distance, then increasing the carbon will take care of it and the odor. You have a huge filter, but for what you are doing, it may be easier to get a canister filter. They are a lot easier to modify when it comes to filter media. Rena also just came out with a kick but power filter that has chambers you fill with whatever filter media you need. it works just like a canister.

You also may have too much biological filtration. That much bio filter has to eat something, which may be a high level of ammonia, which could also be the smell.

Step one, test water.

If you do everything it says in your list then I can't figure out what the smell could be. All I can think of is to use carbon in your filters for a little while. Carbon removes smell, odor, ect.

maybe the water needs to be changed it does get stale after a while. think about bottled water - theres a reason there is an expiration date on it. good luck
