5 squared can be represented by:

5^2;

the symbol ^ is known as a hat or carrot (which is shift 6)

Or if you have a superscript tab, you can represent it by:

5 (superscript 2).

You can type

5^2

^ can be typed by holding down the shift key and hitting the 6.

Or if you want to be neat you can type

5²

The superscript ² can be found on the character map. You can also type it by holding down the Alt key and typing 0178 on the number pad. For some reason typing the same numbers above the letters doesn't work, at least not on my keyboard.

You can type 5^2, of if you want to use the exponent 2, you can hold down the 'Alt' key and type 253 on the number pad, then release the 'Alt' key.

So it would look like:
5²
