Canada's economic culture has a predominant capitalistic vein running through it. Large corporations from all over the world do business in Canada. Large industries abound. Small businesses are thriving. In my view, however, there is also a strong democratic socialist thread that runs through Canadian society. We have our problems here, please don't get me wrong. There is poverty and neglect and there is exploitation. There is racism too. What separates Canada from some other countries is a belief (remember, I say belief) in our political culture that supports universality. What that means is the majority of Canadians believe in equal access for all. However, that is not the economic truth. There are many government programs to support the poor so education, health care and pensions etc. are available. But they are also available to the rich.

In nearly every federal election since the 1960s Canada has had a core group of social democratic voters. It has varied from 10 to 25%. In some countries, like the U.S., most of these people would be labelled bleeding heart liberals or even radicals. In other countries, like France and Sweden, they would be part of the political mainstream. On the other end of the spectrum we have many fiscal and social conservatives. I would say that group is generally about the same size as the left wingers. In America this group of voters is much larger, but it does compare in size, studies show, to the conservative groups in countries like Britain, Italy and France.

You really have to treat each province in Canada seperately to get a better view.

Alberta is the most like the US
Quebec i the least

Ontario and British Columbia are in the middle.
