This is a classic symptom of diabetes, so he needs to be checked for that ASAP! Diabetes is nothing to mess with. A friend just lost two toes because of it and may have to have his whole foot amputated! If it's not diabetes (and I do hope it isn't), then the doctor can advise about what else might be causing the thirst.

Has his diet changed in any way? If he has just started eating a lot of salty prepared/fast foods, that could be it. But diabetes is so serious if untreated that he really MUST be tested for that.

Well I'm not a doctor, but we have been told drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Sounds like there's another underlining problem going on here. There is a reason why he's doing this so... try WebMd.com type in the question and I hope you find your answer . If you are not happy with this sight, Google it again type in the question, last but not least call your doctor, and ask him or her.

Is he just drinking water or juices and milk? The latter two could be a cause of diabetes. Have him go to a doctor and have a blood test done.

This will sound silly, but...
the next time he is thirsty, have him eat a banana instead. I'm not kidding. If this satisfies his thirst, then I suggest you take him to an Endocrinologist & have him tested for Diabetes.
