Well, you've been "accused" not learning anything by one person here. However, I notice that this is in the trivia section. That tells me you know the answer and are just putting this in for the sake of putting it in.

1. There was the most famous, Rosa Parks. Her case is well documented in the above answers.

Before her there was:

2. Mary Louise Smith. Who? Well according to Wikipedia Ms. Smith was arrested a month or so before Ms. Parks. Her family kept it quiet and her case is not well know. She's still a hero though.

and then there was:

3. Teen-aged: Claudette Colvin. About 9 mos before Ms. Parks. Pretty much the same thing, but Ms. Colvin was a pregnant teenager. It is believed now that the NAACP did not think that a pregnant, single teen was a good role model.

Finally, but actually first:

4. Irene Morgan. This was 11 years or so before Ms. Parks and Ms. Smith, and Miss Colvin. Ms. Morgan was not on a city bus, she was on a Greyhound going from VA to MD. She was in the "colored section" [jargon for the time, not my words] But, as was the rule, if a white person needed the seat, the "colored" [again, their words, not mine] had to stand.
Ms. Morgan was sick and did not move. Interesting note: her lawyer was Thurgood Marshall [pardon any misspellings please] This was before he joined the Supreme Court.

To my knowlege this covers it. I think that Ms. Colvn and Ms. Morgan are still alive.

I'll wrap it up by saying this. I am a Southerner and proud of it. And while that was a differnt time, today my mother would be embarrased if I as a Southern Gentleman did not give up my seat for any woman. [and I'm going in 38 soon]
