I am a college senior, and currently at a year long internship. My current employer has expressed interest in hiring me when I graduate, and I am interested, but would also like to explore my options and see what other opportunities I could have.

Is it proper business protocol to ask for references from my current employer? Or would this be a business faux pas?

What do I tell my employer when taking time off to go on interviews?

I wouldnt tell your boss. Try to take the time discreetly. I would only tell your boss if you find a job or your offered a full time position at your current company.

If your trying not tell your boss, I would list the internship because it is an important career step, but I have found that many applications ask if it is ok to contact certain employers.

Either tell the interviewer that you can not use the reference because you are still working, and you don't want your boss to know. Or simply not using them as reference.

You don't tell your current employer nothing, or else he or she will fire you on the spot. wait until your hired for the other job before telling your current boss anything.

I would explain to them that you want to explore other opportunities. They should be understanding.
