Hello my friend is leaving for Europe and I am wondering if they will still be able to call my Virgin mobile cellphone (I am in Canada).

Yes they will. It does not make any difference to your phone if you are receiving calls from overseas. You would only have problems taking your phone overseas since Virgin Mobile phones from the US and Canada don't work over there.

Depending on what country your friend is going to, they should dial 001 before your area code and phone number. I wouldn't use a hotel phone unless they want to get charged a lot of money. Pay phones will charge a lot as well. You should have your friend get a prepaid international phone card and then they can use that at a payphone for a cheap rate. Check out http://www.speedypin.com and put in the country they are calling from and Canada for the country they're calling to and it will suggest prepaid cards for you. They're all quite cheap. I've used them before and they email the pin number to you right away. Likewise if you want to call them, you might want to consider using the same rather than eating up your prepaid minutes (and it would do so VERY quickly for an international call, mind you) but since they're the one who is travelling they should call you since they won't know what they will be doing or where they'll be from one day to the next.

Not all cellular phones are cell. There are satellite phones and radio telephones. I do not know why Australians call phones what they do. Possibly it's simply an affectation. In the us, we name a elevate an elevator, and we name the bonnet of a automobile the hood, versus how the British communicate.
