I was on the beach Christmas Eve 2005 in Galveston, Texas; and the sky was clear, littered with stars but no moon. I turned all around looking for it but only saw stars. What the hell happened to the moon?

The moon orbits around the earth, so once every 14 days the moon is on the other side of the earth. This is called a new moon.

Another possibility is that the moon hadn't risen yet. The moon rises at different times on different days.

That day, It was probably a new moon, or the moon had not risen yet.

The moon didn't rise till after midnight that night. It was last quarter.

Lots of stars. You might have been on the less light polluted part of the island, or maybe there was a blackout somewhere.

It was on the other side of the Earth. The moon orbits around the earth. Sometimes it is above the daylight side of the Earth, and sometimes it is above the nighttime side of the Earth.
