since the recent hanging of saddam, i was wondering why the executionists wore masks over their head? in other hangings, they have worn black masks.

This is so that they wont be recognized and killed by his followers. in retaliation for his hanging.Peace.

When the Iraqi president was talking about all the people who volunteered to execute Saddam, (there were THOUSANDS) he said that they would keep the executioner's identity secret to avoid retaliation.
But in ancient times, I'd go with the whole "please don't possess the executioner" idea.
Plus, what if the executioner was, like, your dad or something? I mean, in a really small village, you might be able to figure out who pulled the rope or cut the neck or however people were executed, but...it would be creepy to sit across from an executioner at dinner or something and just...know. Know the hands passing you a piece of bread wielded a claymore to kill a criminal...ugh. Just too creepy.

So the executioner isn't recognized. That would be kinda awkward to see the executioner at the store. "Hey Joe how are the kids?" Also so the family of the deceased wouldn't take out vengeance on the executioner.

Executioners wore mask to protect their identity to keep relatives and friends of the condemn persons from seeking retribution against them and their family.

The reason exacutioners wear black masks over their heads is to protect their idenity. If the exacution is taped and the exacutioners weren't wearing masks, they could be tracked down and maybe killed by people who are mad because the exacuted some the were close with.

back in the day people used to think that the deciest would come haunt the killers. By keeping masked the ghost couldnt see whom it was. But, like ive said time over time on these things, it is just a traditional thing to do.

i think its cuz the person who is getting hung if any of his/her relatives are there they might want to kill them.so they just wear masks to prevent that i guess!!!
