You make a good point. Women in athletics is not yet as popular as men so the ticket sales can not be the source of equal pay.
Here at UCONN though the Lady Huskeys are far more popular with the fans than then men. I am not sure who earns more.
But that college and they aren't really paid anything while they are in school.

If there is enough money to pay millions of dollars to male basketball stars, there is more than enough to pay for female athletes. I say that the best athletes, reguardless of gender, should get paid the most. But this is only if both genders are offered the same training oppertunities.

the fans, same as the male athletes, so there has to be a huge fan base or women will never make the same money as men.

It is what the market would bear. It is a fact that women are not as good of athletes as men in any sport except long distance cold water swimming--in which we excell.
However--that does not mean there is not awesome female sports and competition--tennis, basketball, volleyball, golf, and more.
These are getting marketed more and more--and increasing in popularity. Part of this ae more female viewers--but men like them as well. As entrepreuneurs see more opportunities in this regard--female sports will grow and there will be increased salaries.

The same as with male athletes. With pro sports, from spectators and sponsors. With amateur sports, from athletic fees, government grants, spectators, and sponsors.
