I am 36 weeks and have gestational diabetes, more amniotic fluid than normal, and my baby is estimated at 10 pounds. I have also been in and out of labor four times in two weeks. Contractions are still coming every 7 or 8 minutes. Were 1 1/2 apart for 5 hours at one point, but the hospital (and my doctor) sent me home because I was not dilating. My doctor had me on two medications to stop the labor but took me off of them today. This makes me happy because the meds made me jittery, light headed, and gave me headaches. I am uncomfortable and trying to hang on till the baby's lungs are strong enough. I am worried because of all of the complications but am at the point where is it safer to be in the womb or out?

I am an insulin dependent diabetic and I have had two children, they are now 21 and 17. I had been diabetic prior to having children and both were born early (about 36 weeks). My daughter was born naturally and my son, the younger one, was induced twice. They have both grown up healthy. I wouldn't worry too much about being induced at 36 1/2 weeks, if your baby is about 10 lbs already, he or she should be just fine.

If your doctor has any concerns about the baby's lungs and an impending labor, they will give you a steroid shot to get the baby's lungs stronger. My twins were born at 36 1/2 weeks, weighed in at 4 lbs. 10 oz. and 5 lb.3 oz. vaginal birth, and we all went home 2 days later. Even with the tiny babies, at 36 1/2 weeks, they were healthy enough to breathe beautifully and are now 5 years old!

Try to remember that your due date is an *average.* That means you could be as much as 38.5 weeks, or you could be only 34.5 weeks.
Also, each day that baby stays inside of you is the equivalent of 3 days in a NICU. (I had a 31 week preemie....trust me, you don't want to go through that.) So, each day that you stay pregnant could mean the difference between needing special care for your baby and him/her being able to go home with you.
So, as uncomfortable as you are now, in the grand scheme of things.....which is more important?
Contractions that don't dilate your cervix are not harmful to the baby. They are actually beneficial. They help to move the baby into the right position for labor. So, don't let that worry you.
The baby is healthy and happy right where he/she is.
Just try to be patient through these last few weeks of your pregnancy. I know it's uncomfortable, but it will be SO worth it!

I had my baby at 34 weeks and he was healthy, fully developed and we were home 2 days later. He is now 3 and doing great. 37 weeks is considered full term and your not far from that at all. Dont worry about anything

Your baby will more then likely survive, but it's lungs are not completely ready so the baby will have to live in a machine for awhile, which is sad, but at least it will live.

sweetie my son was born at 36 weeks. he was absolutley fine. they did an amnio on me to check and see if his lungs were developed and when we got the results back the doctor asked if i wanted to go ahead and have him. i told her yes. she asked if i wanted to have him natural or by c-section i chose c-section. everything was fine. i am sure if you have your baby things will be fine. my son wasn't put on oxygen or anything.
