Adding to some of the good answers above, it is a social fact that in very poverty-ridden regions, money spent in educating girls has more impact in than in educating boys. It is sexist and I am a man and don't really like it. But it makes sense in theses regions because educating girls reduces teen and single mother pregnancy which in turn produces more misery. It is also a fact that the mother's education is more important to the education level reached by the children of a couple than that of the father. So, it does make sense to start social programs by directing the efforts at women.

She limited it to girls because traditional South African society is very much male dominated and she realized that a school for girls would be the best way to allow many girls to develop confidence and exercise leadership roles so they'll be better able to go out and change South African society to make it more inclusive. The exact same sentiment explains the continued existence of all girl schools in this country. One of my co-workers transferred her daughter to an all girls school for exactly that reason and she excelled in that environment in a way she hadn't at a coed school. She's now doing very well at a large national university.
Studies have shown that here in egalitarian America, some girls do better in all girl environments during their formative years. In a very heavily male dominated society like South Africa, I'd imagine that's true in spades.
People have grown more critical of Oprah the more wealthy she's become and because she's so "out there" in what she does. But the truth is that building and funding that school will transform the lives of hundreds, and, if the graduates do go on to take leadership roles in SA society, eventually, thousands. She deserves credit for that. Not sniping condemnation.

I do not watch Oprah, but I expect she is following the sociological information that says that many girls do better in an all-girl educational situation. MANY schools in England are STILL single sex schools and the exam results are IN - such schools have better and higher results.
Imagine? One is not diverted from the project by a boy flirting with you, or a girl in the class giving you 'signals' that distract you from the work at hand.
I assure you, - I went to 11 years of single sex schools and one year of co-ed. It works. Single sex is better.
Now whether Oprah will get big bucks from it! I do not know or care. She is helping someone with a program that is successful. I applaud that, and so should you

It is great for the children who are benefiting from it but there is nothing nothing noble about it. She will make millions more in advertising money every time she does one of her shows about it. She's also feeding her enormous ego.
