Without giving away the answer (or one of many answers, I should say):

You have to set it up so that at least one column adds up to more than 9 (and you carry a 1 to the next column).

The lefthand column can't be the one that adds up to more than 9.

You can use 8 and 9 in the right or middle column and find a solution that works. (They would add to 17, so you'd put 7 at the bottom of the column and carry 1.)

If you use 8 and 9 in one column, then the other two digits of the total are 5 and 6. You just need to figure out what digits to put above them.

Do it one column at a time. You'll need to have a three-digit outcome, so 987 will be the highest total you can achieve.

Then, start by trial-and-error, add a single column and see if you can figure out the patterns.

Maybe find the combinations first? Then try adding them up? I don't know about this suggestion, but it might work. lol. Hope it does.
