can I see a friend if I am not on that persons's IM friend's list?

no babe it doesn't mean you're on that persons's IM friend's list.
why do u ask that? bcoz he never says hello when you're online?

You know if a person is online if they're on your list. It doesn't mean that you're on their list however. Short of asking them, there's no way to find out if you are on another person's friend list.

You can see anyone you add onto your list.
This doesn't mean you're neccessarily on their list, though.

No, they have to add you too so that both of you are considered to be friends.
