Oprah never does anything just for the good of it. She does it for the fame, for the adulation, for the notoriety and because her ego is the size of the hole in the ozone. When she interviews people, she looks at herself in the camera. I've known people who have met her and she is the biggest stuck up person in the world. She is a glory hog. She goes to a store in France after it closes and because she's OPRAH, she expects the people who have been on their feet all day, closed the register and just wanted to go home to open up just for her. When they don't she calls them racist. All she cares about is herself. She's a legend in her own mind.

I totally hear you on the humbleness issue. But telling the public about things is her whole deal, I mean, that is what her show is about. And I think that there are a lot of very rich people who don't have even an inkling to give anything to anyone less fortunate than themselves. Maybe she's trying to lead by example. There are a lot of people who've given money to help that school that maybe wouldn't have without her leading. Either way, something good is being done for those girls in Africa. And even if she tells people about it, aren't the girls really the main focus?
She had one show where everyone was given $1,000 to help someone else... it was a really great thing. It inspired me and my husband to send a care package to a soldier in Iraq for christmas that we don't even know. We should all help others whenever we can.

Have you not noticed that every celebrity is doing stuff like this now?
Donating to charities. Adopting children. It's crazy, half of them (or more) just do it for the publicity.
Anyways, Oprah has no reason to tell everyone about her new school, because if you're a celebrity and you build a whole freaking school, people are going to hear about it.

I have seen such jealousy nor racism in my whole life. This applies to the question and SOME of the answers. First of all did you build a 40 MILLION DOLLAR school in Africa. NO. That is the most generous and thoughtful thing anyone has ever done. She deserves to tell of her GOOD deeds. If I was doing so much good, trust me when I say EVERYONE would have heard.

Oprah is a phoney. Remember a couple years back when she "gave away" cars to everyone in the audience? Turned out she didnt give those cars away. Pontiac/GM footed the bill for it. They just gave them away on her show. And then the people who got the cars got slapped with a $7000 dollar bill for the tax on the cars.
I would love to find out the details of her school she had built. I wonder if there are any stipulations that we arent hearing about.....

I get what you are saying but that Bible quote is not the most appropriate for this question.........I think the one you meant to post was this one....
Mat 6:2 Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Mat 6:3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
Mat 6:4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Yo are right about Oprah and tooting her own horn. I wonder if she knows that you can't buy your way into heaven.

I'm not really defending Oprah, but according to her this has been a dream come true. And Nelson Mandela wanted her to build a school so I think she's very proud that she was able to do this.
It's quite an accomplishment. I give her credit. She also says she does things in America but doesn't talk about it. I believe her.

Because she is doing all the work for publicity so she can make even more money. If she really wanted to help people she should just help them and not say anything. I think there would be more satisfaction in that.

maybe because it is a big news item for one and she doesnt have much choice, and secondly, she is trying to put on a television show. that is how she earns her money - which she can then use to help people.
I am sure there is lots of donations that she makes that are not spread all over the news. she should be applauded for all that she does, not bashed about it

I guess she wants the whole world to know what a philantropist she is. She wants people to know that she's not just spending her money on frivolous things and she's making a difference. Plus she has a huge ego. Whether she's sincere or not remains to be seen.
