Becuse they don't fully understand the nature of the problem. Many infections can be "invited" in as well. Running a current, updated antivirus is a good practice for the average user, but everyone needs to know that no antivirus is 100% effective against all infections.

Effective marketing techniques used by AV vendors, combined with ignorant/ uneducated end-users. An overwhelming portion of the computer owning populace has absolutely no interest in the way their machine functions, as long as they can get on Myspace and download mp3's. If they can pay 59.95, click install, and believe they are immune from possible harm, they are happy.

for some reason they think a firewall isnt needed.
i dont understand it myself, why they think that.
as for virus, worms etc.. some dont update theres as they should it appears
