James and thomas are in two cities which are 186 miles apart and travel toward each other. James' average rate was 32 mph and Thomas' average rate was 36 mph. if James started at 9:00am adn Thomas started at 9:30am, at what time did they meet?

let x represent the time James leaves.
half hour later (.5hr), Thomas leave: x-.5
James' speed: 32miph
Thomas' speed: 36miph
James' distance: 32x
Thomas' distance: 36(x-.5)
Total distance: 186mi
32x+36(x-5)=186
32x+36x-180=186
68x=366
x=5.38 hr
they meet at 2:22pm

32(T - 9) + 36(T - 9.5) = 186
32T - 288 + 36T - 342 = 186
68T = 816
T = 12:00
