hi. i was managing an old apt building with murphys. these things are totally cool. apts were basically studios. murphys made them into real apts. i like these things.
they work with a spring system, be kinda difficult to replicate, there's lots of tension involved. they have a closet built around them.
you could fake it i guess. make a platform for the mattress, rectangle, make a hinge thingy at the headboard, couple of hinged feet. but it won't spring up, you would need a steel frame. still, you could put a hook at the foot so when you fold it up you could hook it to wall behind headboard.
apt building was 100 years old with history, beds prolly fifty+ yrs old. i basically had to mix and match rebuild many. i'll put ya on watch and come back if you have specific questions, messed with these things ten years. here's an idea. search for and find used. (i sold a couple). will find them in old apt buildings
oh here's the thing. the springs that make them work create a gazillion pounds of tension, they go missing but don't wear out. what does wear out is the spring platform where mattress goes, they get saggy. smart handyman can deal with that but that is the weakness if you do find used. also head and foot need to be tight. good luck i'll check back after a while.

There are many site on the net that offer all the materials and what you need to build it. The most expensive thing about the bed is not the wood, it's the hardware for the bed. I don't know what a bed cost, but the parts are not cheap. Good luck.
