vinegar is acetic acid, and baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. the hydrogen ion in the acetic acid wold react with the bicarbonate to form H2O and CO2 gas, and also acetate and sodium ions. the heat from the reaction, and also the escape of CO2 gas from the liquids causes a whole bunch of fizziness that shoots up pretty quick.

I actually tried this when I was in junior high. Because Baking Soda works like a anti-acid when mixed with liquid and consumed(think Alka-Selzer), it would be like taking a bunch of Tums with Ginger -Ale... You would feel very bloated and gassy. I didn't get sick, but felt like I had eaten about 30 Hard-Boiled eggs!

Geeez I just did that an hour ago for my drains. It works good for cleaning drains, it does foam up like others have said. Not in anyway dangerous or anything. Try it.

It frothes up. That's the standard trick kids use to make their volcanoes in elementary science class.

You have a primitive fire extinguisher (those bubles being generated contain and release CO2!).
