I fell on to concrete 3 days ago, after 2 sets of clear xrays I am now in a splint, and have to go back for more next week. I was told that i may have a fractured scaphoid.

I have a nagging pain in my hand/wrist, and my fingers shake if I straighten them. Does any one have any experience of scaphoid fracture - what does it feel like...?

Scaphoid fractures are tricky to treat because they usually don't show up on x-rays until several days after the injury. The typical cause is a fall onto an outstretched hand. The "classic" finding is "snuffbox tenderness". The anatomic snuffbox is the little indentation on the base of your thumb on the back of your hand between the tendons. If you press here and it hurts, it likely is a scaphoid fracture. The injury can be confirmed with a followup x-ray several days after the injury. The treatment is usually with splinting or casting for 6 weeks. Very very rarely surgery is required and this is usually for fractures that would be obvious on initial x-ray. These operations should be done by a trained hand surgeon.

Hope that helps.

Yes Scaphoid Fractures can be very painful indeed, even when you have support on too. With this fractures some times the fracture doensnt always show up till a few wks later, these bones are so small and compacted in to a small area, this is why you have to go bck in a couple off wks.I would advise you to take regular pain relief, try and rest the hand as much as you can, keep the arm elevated when possible, and keep the splint on.When you do go bck in a couple off wks time and you have a fracture there you will be placed into a scaphoid plaster cast up to 8 wks ,scaphoid fractures do some times take this long ot longer in some cases.IF you want anymore advice email me,i deal with fractures etc .Good Luck

I've had one of these. If it's a scaphoid fracture you would expect a very intense continuous ache- real 'can't think straight ' pain
just where the very base of your thumb intersect with your wrist. The scaphoid is a little lozenge shaped bone which, along with the trapezoid forms that joint. If this sounds like you, expect six weeks in plaster from thumb almost to elbow. Buy a squash ball to squeeze when you get out of plaster- squeeze it all the time. That way you'll get your flexibility and strength back much better.

I'm a nurse. Have an x-ray of your hand/wrist you could have an injury there also. The reason why the x-rays were clear at first is because sometimes fractures don't show up on x-rays right away. I would see the doctor again. In addition, make sure you have medication that will make you comfortable during this time.

A typical fracture takes 6-8 weeks to heal. Depending on which pole of the Scaphoid you fractured it could take longer. The blood supply to the south pole of the scaphoid is poor which will make the healing time longer than 8 weeks.

Ive never gotte na scaphoid fracture but ive had a buckle fracture and multiple sprains. having ur fingers shake when u straighten them is totally normal. its just ur body's reaction to the pain. it is most definetly possible that it is fractured and i would suggest somehow getting a cast mayb. thats the best way for it to heal.
