The way you pronounce the vowel when you say the alphabet is the sound of a long vowel.
If you were asked to mark all the vowels as they appear in the alphabet, you would put the straight line over each vowel a,e,i,o, and u. The cupped sign would be over short vowels. Pat is a long vowel and pay is a short vowel.
There are some other ways to pronounce vowels but it will have a diacritical marking over it if so. For example, some vowels have a schwa sound which is indicated by putting ae and it sounds like the "ah" we say when hesitating to say the next word.
The front of most dictionaries will have a pronunciation key with all the diacritical markings as well as words as examples .

Say that the short vowel sounds are in "pat, pet, pit, pot, but". As he is only 7, he will have only short, simple words I suppose. The words with long vowels will have a silent 'e' at the end. Sale, spoke, ride, rude.
