You can also do what I do and just wind the yarn into a ball without an inside pull string. I'm currently reknitting a sweater in a cotton silk blend that I wore for about 6 months, lost some weight and didn't like how it fit anymore. The yarn was expensive and it's worth the effort to redo it.

The most commonly used devices for this task are called "hands." These have been used in making balls of yarn for centuries, literally.

If you're new to yarn crafts and aren't familiar with winding yarn into balls, wrap one end around your hand about 10-15 times. Slide it off without tangling it, twist it into a figure 8, and fold it over on itself. Now start winding the rest of the yarn around this core. Don't leave it too loose and don't pull it too tight; you'll figure out what's right pretty quickly. When you get to the end, get a small clip or twist-tie and secure the end of the yarn so it doesn't unroll.

If you want to make a pull-from-the-middle ball, leave about a foot of yarn hanging out of your hand when you start to wrap the yarn around it, and then wind the ball as usual. It'll have a tail.
