Sometimes. The French revolution started out to copy the US revolution and promote liberty, and ended in the dictatorship of Napoleon. The Russian revolution initially created a democracy and ended in Communism.
On the other hand, the American Revolution and the Iranian revolution ended up pretty much as their creators intended.

Usually. I don't think most French would have had theirs if they could have foreseen the death and corrupt government they were bringing about.
I don't think most sane Russians would have overthrown the Czar if they would have for seen the enslavement of themselves and the murder of over 30 million of their own people.
The biggest part of our revolution was not the war but coming up with a government which left the people free. Something today no other country has anymore, sadly, not even the US.

oh yes. Look at the ides of March. Caesar was killed by the right-wingers thinking they would be celebrated as "hero's of the republic" It had the opposite effect. They thought that by killing a dictator like Caesar it would move Rome into a more senate controlled government even though that senators had more influence then power. Look what happened too all the main conspirators. They all died 4-5 years after the fact...

Additionally, with respect to the previous answers. The French Revolution was a rearrangement of the French aristocracy. They just used some marketing lines to get the peasants to fight for them.

revolutions are always co-oped by both counter-revolutionary forces and other forces who either put the power of the many into just a few ahnds who can be "steered" or controled;or usurp the powers grasped and struggled for after all of the forces have depleted and weakened themselves in overt conflict!!the "whites" of the russian revolution won the war;but the "reds"bolsheviks killed and "stole" the revolution as it was still in the process of organizing the territories formerly controled by the czars and their loyalist/capitalist and cossack army/calvary factions!!they spread their forces too thin and the "reds" were better organized and funded in the crucial city/urban centers and in consolidating control of the railroads!!many international groups sponsored by america, britain and france were engaged both behind the scenes in the political rivalries and on the battle front to maintain their countries' investments and capital outlays and loans to the czarist government structures and industries in oil production, grain and railroads and mining concerns!!castro, sadaam hussein, diem, chang kaishek, reza pahlavi, manuel noriega and others were all financed and supported in coups, revolutions and siezures of power by the u.s. government and the c.i.a. in particular ;as was osama bin laden!!and the american taxpayer is always burdened to pay for these "petty wars" that through their inept and scurrilous methodologies become quantumly worst for their misguided and talentless efforts!!meanwhile all that is good of america is subverted and dashed in the perveiw of international reputation and influence by the most dastardly and criminal endeavors that color our country in a disdainful light before all nations as a provocateur, stupidly warlike and self- aggrandising: a troublsome presence in the world instead of a light to peace and prosperity that were indeed once truly were!!
