Air is thicker at sea level and retains more heat than the thinner air at higher elevations.

During the day the sun heats the ocean and it retains the heat. As for the mountains the higher up you go the thinner the air causing it to be colder.

Well the sea absorbs heat all day and retains it. Going higher up it always gets colder, there's less air, etc. but i'm sure there is a better answer than i have sorry :P

Good question. I'm no expert or anything, but I believe because the higher you go, the air pressure is lower, resulting in colder temperatures.
