This is serious and the beginning signs of degenerative disease, such as osteoarthritis. The cracking sound is the sound of bone hitting each other because the cartilage has been worn away in some spots. Some of the popping is just nitrogen build up in the joint. If you don' take action very soon (with a doctor's advice), plus probably some chondrointin and glucosamine (like all the other people said), you may end up having knee replacement surgery (which is two pieces of metal that are circular screwed into your bone in order to keep the bones from scaping each other and becoming deformed and eventually locked together - major painful stuff).

My knees started cracking badly everytime I bent down since I was around 16 too. My mother has always had the same problem. I don't think there's anything you can do about it. And I've never done too much running.

NO!! STOP IT!!
I used to crack my knees all the time, even cause I just wasnt comfortable until they cracked. I had this because of the flamenco dancing, and one day at one crack I broke the liquid between my bones on my knee!! its seriously dangerous! stop doing it! you can end up having a surgery!!
the doctor told me all knees bend different, and in my case, probably yours as well its very likely that you shouldnt do certain excercices or make much effort on your knees!!

Don't bend down, lol. I really don't think there's much you can do about that except taking suppliments that build up and/or strengthen your joints and ligaments.
