Don't know where that one answerer got the idea that $1000 for a place to live in Chicago is not enough. This ain't NYC, where you can't get a STUDIO for $100 a month. You can get a decent apartment in a nice neighborhood in Chicago for $750-900+, and have a lot of money left over.
Here are available apartment in Andersonville (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A2186&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Edgewater (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A2184&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Lakeview (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A250&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Lincoln Park (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A2183&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Old Town (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A18766&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Ravenswood (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A18767&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Roscoe Village (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A18769&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=), Wrigleyville (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A18772&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=) and the South Loop (http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Results?sort=Random&subsection=oid%3A122&neighborhood=oid%3A145020&zipCode=&zipCode=&zipCode=&bedrooms=1BR&rentMin=min&rentMax=max&searchPhrase=&submit=). Some places are a wee bit more than $1000 a month, but most are well below it. And all of them are in nice neighborhoods. It depends on what type of neighborhood you're looking for: Something kinda "yuppie-ish" with a lot of bars and places to hangout (Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, Old Town), something kinda family-oriented, a little hip and more like a "real" Chicago neighborhood (Andersonville, Edgewater, Ravenswood, Roscoe Village) or somewhere upscale with lofts (South Loop). But if you've got $1000 a month just to spend on rent, you can live like a king (or queen) in the city. You don't need a car because public transportation goes pretty much everywhere. And you don't have to head to the one section of town where everything is, like a small town, because each area has its own nightlife. Do your research and pick a place.

$1000 is a little tight if you plan to live by yourself. The best thing to do would be to find a roommate. For $2000 you could get a great 2 or 3 BR place just about anywhere.
Still, you should be able to find a studio or 1BR, but it is a question of how nice it will be. Here is a list of neighborhoods from most expensive to least that you might consider...
Lincoln Park
Bucktown/Wicker Park
Lakeview/Wrigleyville
A little cheaper, but still very nice:
North Center / Roscoe Village
Lincoln Square
Andersonville
Ravenswood
Ukrainian Village
Hyde Park - (on the South Side)
Up and coming, but maybe sketchy
Rogers Park / Edgewater
Uptown
Logan Square
Try to avoid: Humboldt Park. It's close to Bucktown, but very sketchy. Also, you need to be careful a little careful about the specific location in the up and coming neighborhoods and in Hyde Park. If you are on the fringe of the neighborhood or in a bad building it could be dicey. West Loop is an area that you could consider, but I think it is overpriced.
There are other neighborhoods. Check out www.ChicagoReader.com or Craigslist. Both are great for finding apartments and/or roommates.
