It's not an act. I'm gay and I honestly don't know why some gay men act as a "nancy pancy" as you say. I think it probably has to do with the level of femininity and masculinity. Some gay men are very feminine, some are very masculine, and some are inbetween. I myself am inbetween, not overly feminine and not overly masculine. The thing is, we are born gay, so if someone is really putting on an act and pretending to be gay, they have a problem. The reason you seem to be running into so many feminine gay men, is because they are the ones who stand out to you. You could be running into more masculine gay men and not even know it, because they show no signs of being gay. For instance, I am only out to my parents, and my sexuality is not obvious. I think many people assume that I am straight.

I think you may well have a point without really realising it. There are some people who flock to the 'gay' stereotype for a variety of reasons from wanting attention to security and needing a sense of belonging. There are some people who are just 'camp' by nature and that is not always a determining factor in their sexuality. However as with any generalisation being 'gay' means alot of different things to alot of different people. For me it is straightforwardly being romantically and asthetically attracted to the same sex. It is not about hiding who I am anymore than it is about needing to act like (to quote your phrase) an awful nancy pancy!
So the answer to your question is really there are real gay people out there some of them conform to stereotype in order to feel like they belong, but the majority are just 'normal' people who get on with their lives the same way anyone else does. However there are people who become the 'gay stereotype' with varying degrees of sincerity.

Well I can only speak as I find. Most of the gay people I know are just Human Beings who happen to be gay, not the other way round. They have their worries, their problems their likes and dislikes. O.K. when we get together we can let our hair down, well we would if we had any to talk of, but that is for our entertainment, no one elses. You cannot generalise about any grouping.
P.S. I am far too old to be either trendy or fashionable!

Well I really do not understand why any1 wants to be a gay or a lesbian in order to go with the trend! Why would anybody want to deviate his or her sexuality(go against the conscience) just because of a trend? For me its stupid.I'm a straight and i cant even imagine of being gay to make it look like a fashion.
Aeirlys and breein i've got to tell you are wrong. Its not the trend but your genetics.I find these people are trying to find lame excuses for being gay!Come on tell the truth that its your nature!Being gay or lesbian is ok but dont say its coz of a trend since it deviates your sexuality.
Coz how on earth can u kiss, makeout or have sex with a same sex unless you are gay or bi?Though its a trend or a fashion to do those stuff there should be homo feelings inside you.
To the person who asked this question what i've got to tell you is that, they(gay or bi people) produce lame excuses saying its a trend to go with their conscience. There's nothing like that.To do gay activities you've got to be gay and it has to come inside of u!

The trouble with you straights is that you stereotype everyone the same. Are all straights lager louts - since I see lots of them rolling round the streets at night?
No it is not trendy to be gay and no they are not all effeminate as you suggest. The majority of gays are sensible individuals and do not go around in the way you suggest. You have probably spoken to and been alongside many gays without realising it. Perhaps you should socialise with more gays - then you would realise how wrong you are.

I can't imagine that anyone would want to pretend to be homosexual to be "Trendy" or "Fashionable" First of all .. you know all the hell they go through with people just for coming out as gay ? .. Why add the ignorance of some people to the list of what you have to go through just to live well on a daily basis. Secondly, I happen to be heterosexual .. Why would I want to be / act like a homosexual to be trendy or fashionable ? .. Makes no sense to me. Good Luck ! :)

It is a matter of genetics. Why would anyone choose to be discriminated against and sometimes killed or tormented. I am so called "straight" and that is genetics just like the fact I have hazel eyes. Why are we so afraid of anyone who is different from us? Yes, some gays have more feminine traits and sometimes we think it is funny behavior. Personally I like gay men. It's like having a girlfriend. We can discuss anything and they relate to me. I have had nothing but heartbreak from straight men. Sometimes I have wished I were gay because I have always had good relationships with women. But, again, it is all a matter of genetics.

I think some like playing the nancy, but most I know are not that way. They are men that, other than good taste in fashion and style, are no different than straight men in terms of behaviours.

As a gay man I find this question ridiculous and offensive. Why on earth should anyone pretend to be gay, and have to put up with the attitude of homophobic bigots, if it's not true?

Well I'm bi myself, so i know for sure that people can like their same gender. Trust me, I am the last person to follow a trend and hated being bi at first, although I did eventually grow to love and accept myself; gays/bis really do exist.
