Is this a new furnace? If it is you will find a circuit board inside of it. On that board you will find terminals that have letters near them. You should see R,W,Y,C,G,B Connect the red wire to R and the white wire to W. Make sure that you have the wires connected the same way at the T-stat. Red to R and white to W.

r & w whirpool was bought out years ago by tempstar. This is an older furnace. The heat exchanger should be checked for cracks.

Derek has it right. red & white for heat only.
