We have a neighbor who is a very nice woman, but isn't quite right in the head. Talks about the government bugging her house and Fergie (the British one) coming through her line at work. I definitely give her fake smiles and nods of the head.

Yes, I do sometimes, but I can't keep a fake smile. I know a few people like that, and they freaking scare me! Their face is devoid of happiness and it's just scary and not right, almost like the person is a stor dummy.
But I do occasionally to teachers and my classmates. It's sometimes a way to get them off of my back so that I can be left alone. "Yes, I'm doing pretty well. And you?" *big smile* Then off I go...
Also, it makes them think in a way that everything is all right, which it sometimes isn't. However, I think in the back of some of their minds, they know I'm faking it.
Sometimes I do just frown and say screw it... you know, one of those days... ha ha...

I make 'em so fake as to be obvious... if I have to use 'em, I figure use 'em pointedly. Generally aimed at those being deliberately obtuse...
