When I was looking into community service, I found most places would not take volunteers under 16 or 18 years old because of insurance issues. Now that I'm 16 I volunteer at my county animal shelter. You may be able to find a smaller rescue that would let you help out. Or you may be able to help with paperwork and such at a larger shelter.
If your city shelter dosn't post animals pictures on the internet, you could offer to help set up an account for them on a website like www.petfinder.com and take pictures of animals that are up for adoption.

Pick up your phone book or use Yahoo search to find "Humane society" or "animal rescue" in your area of the Garden State.

Tell them you want to volunteer and they will tell you any requirements. They will also want to get the ok of your parent(s) or guardian.

You need to be advised.....animal shelters can be some of the saddest places in the world to visit. It tears my heart up every time I've had to visit and I'm a hunter and have seen people killed in accidents, etc. You need to be emotionally strong to understand that many of the pets people wrecklessly let breed wind up unwanted, diseased and euthanised. It's a sad thing.

Call up your local humaine society and they can point you in the right direction.

(Keep in mind most places require you to be at least 16 to volunteer - but i'm sure there is something you can do)
