First, you start like any other team, doing all the usual stuff. The next registration is mid-season unless you play salary cap on another site, which is the same as salary cap football. Next you will be confronted with two league choices rotisserie(commonly abbreviated roto) and head to head leagues.

Rotisserie leagues have an assigned group of categories which you compete in, trying to get the most of that throughout the season. Points are given out based on how many teams yours beats in particular category over the season (So if you have more assists than 6 teams you get 6 points).

Head to head is exactly like it sounds. You face another team every week and isn't dependent on the other weeks. Again, you try to get more of a given category than the other guy. Wins and losses are counted by category, not by overall (so if you win FG%, PTS, Stls, Blks, TOs, and Rebs but lose FT%, 3 pointers, and Asts, you would come out of that week 6-3). At the end of the season the top 6 teams (depending on league settings) go to the playoffs and the winner is determined that way.
You draft a roster depending on the league settings (yahoo default is PG, SG, any guard, SF, PF, any forward, 2 C, and 2 Util(anything you want)). This can vary greatly depending on your league though.

You may have to wait until mid-season to register. Yahoo has free games that you can play.

Usually, you sign up and either you choose a league or a league is chosen for you. After the league is chosen you participate in a draft (a live one where you pick your players, or a an automated one where players are chosen for you). You'll have a certain number of players for each position (PG, SG, SF, F, PF C and utility players). You usually have to set your lineups for every day of the NBA season. Scoring depends on whether you're doing rotisserie or head to head. Rotisserie gives you point for being the tops in a particular area (10 point for most assists etc.) Head to Head you tally up points in several different areas and try to beat out your opponent.

I hope I've given you an overview at least.

Good luck and enjoy!

I played last season and never understand how they give points.

I'm not playing this year or ever again. I got jacked points.
