I just got a call from my brother. He told me that his 2 year old daughter had opened an oxygen absorber pack, thinking it was sugar, and ate it.

He said she started sreaming, got short of breath, and stoped talking. He rushed her to the ER and then called me.

The doctors can't do much yet, it only happened about 15 minutes ago.

Oh god!! I am so worried we are going to lose her, please tell me what you think will happen.

I am ready to expect the worst, but still I can barely breath through my tears.

Jessa, her name, Is so sweet and It would wreck my brother if she left us.

Please, any news on what might happen would help us!

Thank you so very much for your concern to answer this, I just hope the little angel is going to be okay.

I think she ate too much. My brother has a packaging company so he has LOADS of the little packets like in beef jerky, and other things.

Her mom was looking around for the packets and found seven of them opened!

My brother updated that she is turning blue and is shaking severely.

Please, don't tell me to call down, I have six kids of my own and It kills me to see him go through this!!

It's not a pill, it comes in like a sugar packet, and clearly states, DO NOT EAT!!!

My brother said that they will not induce vomiting until they acctually know how much she ate.

On the other hand, she is dehydrated enough to make her vomit.

I will check back to let the really nice answerer who actually UNDERSTANDS the situation know how it turns out.

Well, she is now in a partial coma.

They have her on a ventilater and a saline drip.

now, she is in ICU. The doctors said if she dosen't show any sighns of improvement they will put her on a blood filter system.

If she is lucky, they may be able to take her out of ICU by MONDAY.

See, there is a real reason to freak out!!

Okay, not a good situation. But good reaction by your brother!

The contents are poisonous and can cause a constriction of the airway as well as other serious effects.

The result will be determined upon how much she actually ingested. Typically a two year old will not intake enough to do serious long term harm. There are several treatments the doctor can and will choose to use depending on their determination of the stage of poisoning, the known quantity taken, and her exhibited symptoms.

While it is a serious situation he did the best thing he could have. We'll hope and pray with you.

Please do a follow up so we know she is okay!

I am so sorry to hear that she is not out of the woods yet. I will keep checking back, please let us know as she progresses. I've been there with one of mine when she was two. Our prayers are
with you, your brother's family an his little girl.

I was so hopping that when I checked back you would have had good news to report. I'm so sorry, If she has been having sezures then the quantity to weight ratio of the amount of toxin that was injested and entered the blood stream was very high. Having her on a blood filter was a good move by the doctors though.
Do you know if the doctors ever induced vomiting? I am suprised with the early symptoms you indicated, but I know you said they wouldn't induce vomiting until they knew how much she ate. Obviously she ate much of what was found as empty packets. I would have thought with the information of 7 empty packets they would have went forward with induced vomiting to lessen the quantity that could enter the bloodstream, but I wasn't there and their are several other factors to consider so I am not trying to cast doubt on her treatment.
Only time will tell now, it is a good sign that she reccognises you and others. Hopefully there will not be permanent or long term damage. Please continue to let us know how she progresses. If you have time and would like, please feel free to email me at drgosomer@gmail.com. I wish there was more I could do to help.

i don't know much about this product except for the fact that if the pack says 500cc's then it will absorb 500cc's or more. There is so much oxygen in the body that she should be fine. And I would think that the pill wouldn't have enough time to react before the pill hit the stomach acid and dissolved. The pills contain iron, which of course the body is no stranger to.

Is the oxygen absorber harmful? No, it is not harmful, but do not use it as a spice packet. It tastes awful.

don't worry, relax.
