To my knowledge, Jewish peoples do not have the choice of the Torah. It is the fairness of the court that peoples of all religions swear by one book. The unfairness of it is that that one book is the Bible, and not everyone is Christian to swear the Bible. To answer the question, Muslims are not looked upon highly in the United States for obvious reasons being terrorism, wars, enemies, against their allies, et cetera. Having the first Muslim in Congress in a great achievement! I personally think it's a great idea for Mr. Ellison to swear by his own faith's book, since it is a widely acknowledged faith and also because Allah (God) is the same God Christian's and the Bible believe in, so it's not much of a difference. The reason why it's a big deal is because of people like Virgil Goode and his rude and ridiculous statements like:
"warned that unless immigration is tightened, 'many more Muslims' will be elected and follow Ellison's lead."
First of all, Goode parent's are immigrants, there's nothing wrong with more Muslims to be elected, except for their apparent stereotypes.

Because some people are still bigoted morons, who think that EVERYONE must be a Christian. U.S. Representatives aren't sworn in (officially) with ANY kind of religious book. However, they can pose for personal photos using a Bible, Talmud, Qur'an, or any text they like. (John Adams used a law book -- I've heard some use a copy of the Constitution).
Sad to think that in 2006, there are people ELECTED TO CONGRESS that are so frightened of what they don't know or understand and have no desire to educate themselves or ask legitimate questions to become more informed.

His hand may be on the holy Qur'an but he is swearing to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The Qur'an is in this case and certainly NO DISRESPECT intended, is a Holy book of the word of God. I have no problem with his choice of Book on which to swear to uphold our Constitution.
The bigger question should be why, if there is separation of church and state, do our elected officials even place their hand on a book of God when being sworn in???? Just wondering.

the jews have no problem with the bible, neither should the muslims since 90% of the Koran is borrowed from the bible anyway.

911 made biggots of us all to some extent. If Ellison was to swear in on the bible would that not be the same as a christian representative swearing in on say a copy of "Alice in Wonderland". It would be meaningless.

amali tamale, im guessing that it is because people are closed minded and they fear any change in goverment, even wen the change is small or right. thats not the way it should be, but it is for now until we go in there and take congress by a storm and show them that they shouldnt mix religion and goverment and to open their minds. luv alwayz, miamiblue

Because people fear what they don't understand. Furthermore, people make the link between being a Muslim and terrorism. It's ridiculous. I myself am agnostic, so who knows what they'd make me use. I'd perfer to just be swown in on the Constitution.

You are not the only one who feel that way, apparently.
And Does anyone know if Jews are sworn in with the Talmud? That is a really good question...
