How long after? The most recent event after the fall was the assimilation of the mongols and east europeans. They brought a lot of ouside knowledge and learning to a rather morabund existence in Europe.
Further down the road came the Norman conquest, the Black Death, the crusades, the age of exploration, the industrial revolution, etc.

The raise and fall of the Catholic church was huge. When the roman empire fell in the west, the church was able to grow. they were able to take up many of the roles that the government usually filled. this put the trust and loyalty of the people in the churches hands. the religion spread because there was really nothing to stop it. The church had a lot of power and could bring down a monarch. When Martin Luther came around he opened a lot of doors for people. Now the catholic religion wasn't the only one out there. when people were excommunicated it wasn't the end of the world like it use to be. That is very important because before there was more than one religion in Europe to turn to being excommunicated really was the end of life as you knew it.

Attila the Hun was the one who defeated the Roman Army in the end. For what remained of Rome in the 500's or so, the Pope negotiated with Attila for peace. Attila agreed (but for his own reasons...supplies and illness of his troops). Attila died shortly thereafter. This elevated the Pope to being on the side of God that the Church really play up. The RC Church was in charge of Europe well through the 1700's...some even debate it still has a lot of political power.
