8 cups is the most common amount, but you might need more or less depending on the weather. Even though it sounds gross, I would look at the color of your urine. If it is bright yellow or darker, it means you need more water, it it is light yellow to clear, it probibly means you are drinking enough water.

You need about 12 cups of water per day (for a full grown man)

if you don't have close to that you may become dehydreate. :-(
Signs and symptoms of dehydration include:

Mild to excessive thirst
Fatigue
Headache
Dry mouth
Little or no urination
Muscle weakness
Dizziness
Lightheadedness
