My dad always told me the 3 I grew up with were the middle 3 (we all know this.) He also told me there were 3 before (we all know this to be true as well.) But he also said there would be 3 after the first 6. My fiance disagrees and thinks there are only other projects such as cartoons, games, etc. Does anyone know the truth?

Lucas outlined Three sets of plot ideas.

He filmed what he thought was the strongest of the three
Star Wars (episode 4)
Empire Strikes Back (e 5)
Return of the Jedi (e 6)
Made a zillion dollars, then decided to flesh out the backstory or pre-history of the events depicted therein. hence episodes 1,2,and 3 or...
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

Since he never decided to film a third set, the third set of stories remains a mere outline that only Lucas himself has any ideas about.

So yes, it IS true that there were "9 parts" to the story and yes it Is true that right now, he's not planning on filming 7,8 and 9 for theater release..

However, He's working on a Star Wars television series. He might tell the stories of episodes 7,8 and 9 in that format. His appearance in the Rose parade tells me he's going to unveil something new soon.

The original rumors in the 70's and 80's was that Lucas was planning 9 movies, middle than the first followed by the last 3. Lucas has more recently said this was never true and he always planned it to be 6, the cycle of Anakin--from his travels to and return from the Dark Side.

There was a great set of books by Timothy Zahn that was supposed to take place 5-10 years after Jedi. Great reading if you get the chance. Many other books, cartoons etc are out there.

Your dad was correct to a point, the rumour was always that there would be 9.

There were originally supposed to be 9 episodes. George Lucas started with 4, 5 and 6. Then 1, 2 and 3. My understanding is now he does not intend to make 7, 8 and 9. But originally that was the plan.

In 1979, director George Lucas said in an interview on the set of The Empire Strikes Back, "The first script was one of six original stories I had written in the form of two trilogies. After the success of Star Wars, I added another trilogy. So now there are nine stories. The original two trilogies were conceived of as six films of which the first film was number four." Lucas backed this up with a 1980 interview with the L.A. Reader, stating "Star Wars is really three trilogies, nine films... it won't be finished for probably another 20 years."

Dreamweaver is right. Originally Lucas planned on making a 9 part epic. But over time that changed, and now he has gone on record as saying it will only be 6. However, there is a live action TV series in the works, but it will not touch on the Skywalker saga at all. It will focus on minor characters, and introduce new ones.

Lucas originally planned for nine parts. But now he says that six is all that he will do.

P.S. I never understood why he didn't make the LAST three, since the actors who were in the original movies are still alive. They could have had lesser roles in the final three, but it would have brought the original fans to see them as well as the younger ones. Considering the quality of the most recent three films, I think that would have been a better choice.

Lucas originally planned 9 after he made the first one. The original 3 would be the "center" of the story, there would be the "prequel" trilogy (the pile of crap that just completed). There were 3 more movies planned which would happen after the original star wars trilogy, but I don't know if that will happen now or not.

True, but so far only 6 have been made into movies. There are 3 more to follow (If Lucas ever bothers), and they are set after Return of the Jedi.

Originally, there were 9 planned. But George Lucas has said that the last three will not be made, so there will only be a total of six, unless George changes his mind.
