I am assisting my first grade daughter with her project for girl scouts. They are representing Japan in a community-wide taste of the world exhibit. If you know anything about Japanese girl scouts that would be bonus!!

I lived in Japan for 3 1/2 years. Most kids are involved in clubs at schools starting in 5th grade. These clubs meet daily so there isn't much time for other activities.

Popular clubs are badmitton, basketball, ping pong, tennis, flower arranging, band, art and sometimes tea ceremony.

Starting in junior high school (our 7th - 9th grades) most girls and boys go to extra classes after their clubs finish around 4:30. They learn more math, English and other subjects till as late as 10 or 11pm.

In my town they didn't have Girl Scouts so the girls joined Boy Scouts and were accepted.

I don't personally know any scouts - male or female! But here's the scout web-sites' English page;
http://www.scout.or.jp/e/
and here's the guide on which section the kids are in at which ages;
http://www.scout.or.jp/e/programme.html

Here's the web-site for the GIRL scouts of Japan ... the boy scouts have girls too, but the girl scouts don't have boys...!!! Fairly typical - not of Japan, but of the world..!
http://yokoi.com/girlscout/girlscout.html

Girls in general are treated as normal human beings in Japan - there's no obvious preferential treatment given to boys just because they ARE boys - but women often give up work when they marry, and if they don't do that then they usually have to give up work when they have kids. But that has nothing to do with 'girls'! You also don't get people around here whining that they've got X number of girl children, and won't stop 'trying for a boy' until they get one! People are quite happy to have either girls OR boys - or a combination!

Kids in Japan usually do a little 'light' cooking, and at school each day a group of kids serve food for the class - they also clean the room after lunch! This prevents most of the problems you get when kids expect adults to do EVERYTHING for them..! At the very LEAST they know how to clean the floor..!
