Being a photographer doesn't require a college degree.

You can look at being an assistant and learning from them. Or, some people work at those mall photo stores taking pictures (cuz many don't require experience) and going off on your own later.

If taking standardized tests is not for you, take some photography classes at your local JC.

If you don't need a degree consider taking photo classes at a community collage. After a semester or two look into getting any work you can for a local photographer.

What did you expect to do ... work for yourself? Most photographers to make ends meet shoot weddings.

You will also need to educate yourself on running a business.
From marketing to keeping tax records.

When I did this a while back I freelanced a story, compete with pictures, to the local newspaper of a new bridle gown shop opening up. I tied this in with a non profit organization so I could send it out a press release. I didn't get paid for the story but the referrals I got from the bridal shop were amazing.

Look for books at the library on starting your own photo business. Good Luck.

I learned a lot by subscribing to Modern Photography magazine. I'm not sure if that magazine still exists, but others like it are bound to be out there. Get a camera and start shootin'!
