a formula equation is when you add 1 substance (x) and another substance (y), produces a product (Z)
x+y=Z
a molecular formula shows the exact number of atoms of each substance in a compound or product
e.g H2S2O8

A formula equation would be show how to react chemicals to make a desired chemical. A molecular formula would show the elements and the number of each that make up a certain molecule.
H2O is water. 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom make a water molecule. It might also show their spatial arrangement.
