Mark Twain should never be banned from any school.

His use of certain "taboo" words was acceptable in his day, and should in no way be construed as promoting the use of racial epithets. In fact, a good teacher will use Twain to show how much racial relations Have improved, how far we still need to go, as well as use it to discuss book-banning in general.

Very little of anything should ever be "banned" form a library. That doesn't mean that libraries in schools should stock "letters to Penthouse" or grisley murder mysteries or Stephen King horror books. If a book is age-appropriate it should be included.

I wouldn't even "ban" the books like "Heather has two Mommies" or other controversial works. These can be kept under librarian control and given out with parental permission.

Given the particular reason for banning Huckleberry Finn--supposed encouragement of racism--no. It's a perfect book to actually be studied as a group so that everything can be talked about and the kids don't go reading it on the side on their own and not understanding the satire of it.

And yes, there are of course things that kids should not read. I mean, who in their right mind would allow Judy Blume's "Wifey" in a school library? But banning Huckleberry Finn is about being politically correct, not about what kids actually should or shouldn't be exposed to.

Of course not. Now that we have entered the year 2007 I thought we were past burning Mark Twain's writings...which are classic.

School libraries should contain a wide mix of books on just about anything...of course there should not be books of an adult nature or containing adult themes in school libraries...that is why there are specially trained librarians hired to manage them. The final judges of a child's reading is of course their parents. It is up the the parents to monitor what their child is reading just as it is their responsibility to monitor what they watch on TV.

I have always read whatever my children have wanted to read or are reading. I have enjoyed many of the same books as my children and have discovered they have excellent taste in authors as well as subjects. As they get older I find that I can trust their judgment more and relax my vigilance a bit. It helps that we enjoy the friendship of another family of female avid readers that we can swap books with as well. So if I haven't had the chance to "screen" a book that they borrow I know my friend has already read it as she knows that I have read any books they borrow from us. Sometimes it is hard for the two of us Mom's to keep up with the reading habits of our 5 girls! But it is worth the effort! Keep reading!!!

no. I read it november 2008 for my ap english class and i didnt have to get parental permission. also, i attend a public school in southern california. I think it's more like some school districts do not put the book in the curriculum because of its somewhat offensive language etc.

No, of course not. It's a classic American work that reveals the strains of the country that existed then and carry on, in many ways. Why should children be "sheltered" from that?

I think nor. In the book Huck's friend is *** ger Jim. This terminology, was prevalent in the day and time in which the book was written. Yes it is a slang, rascist term, but these were rascist times.

I don't think knowledge of any kind should be withheld from anyone. People are capable of making up their own minds.
